DILI, 12 september 2022 (TATOLI) – The Residence Coordinator of the United Nation in Timor-Leste, Roy Trivedy said that Timor-Leste should focus on the key priority to achieve a country’s vision in the future, saying this priority requires the responsibility from the leaders to create welfare for the people in the country.

“Timor-Leste should focus on some key priorities including Education, Health, Agriculture, Inclusion, Tourism, and Public Works, to ensure the quality of human resources and bring welfare in the future, thus Timorese leaders have a responsibility to realize this welfare for the Timorese people,” UN Residents, Roy Trivedy told TATOLI Agency, in UN Headquarter, Caicoli, friday.

According to Mr. Trivedy, Timor-Leste must improve the quality of education, and increase the Health system in the country by providing more training and nutrition, and food fortification programs: “Government should increase the budget for Education and Health to develop the human resource and through training and reduce malnutrition,”

“Ministry of Health data indicates that 47% of children under five suffer from stunting. This issue gives a big impact on children’s brain development which is not also contributing to the quality of human resources in the future, for such reason World Bank recommended the government to increase health finances from 10 million USD to 15 million USD to cover the health programs every year,”

He recalled that many unpleasant events such as covid-19 situation and natural disasters and violence that happened in 2019 and 2020 have regenerated many impacts on many countries around the world and impacted human beings.

“The impacts were many people were dying due to the pandemic. Last August, in Timor-Leste, there were 166 new cases and we had five deaths. In the cold season, the covid-19 spikes up in European countries. In the main time of course the impacts of war in Ukraine, impact energy crises, food crises, fuel, and energy fertilization of rice. Life extensive is increasing and causing poverty in small and poor countries including Timor-Leste, millions of people are jobless, unemployed, and causing stolen and violence, hangers, etc,” Mr. Trivedy said.

To address all the issues the United Nations Organization hosted the 2022 UN global regional conference to address many of the deep-rooted problems of societies laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic and which will require major structural transformations and common shared solutions that are anchored in the SDGs.

At one point in this, Trivedy congratulates Timorese leaders on their effective participation in the global regional conference adding that this is great participation to get global guidance and also adopt world organizations policy.

“Timor-Leste has great participation to engage in global issues. It is important to involve in the international meetings to address the difficult issues and released Timor-Leste’s desire to join ASEAN, World Trade Organization,” said Trivedy.

So far, the government of Timor-Leste has participated in some international conferences such as the ASEAN conference, GlasGlows conference and the Global Leadership Summit, and others.

According to Trivedy TL will also attend the education transforming summit that takes place in New York later this month,

“We will attend of course the UN general assembly this year. UN systems and partners have to help the government definitely to attend the extraordinary assembly meeting that will take place in New York. All leaders from many countries will discuss issues of growing inequality, service professionals, social protection, and what is happing in human development,” The UN residence coordinator informed.

On 27 November, the next climate change meeting will be taken place in Egypt and also another thing there is a lot of work from GlasGlows held last year. The major thing is that the rich countries provide funding for adaptation to all the people in the least developed country.

“We have to change our lifestyle, the way we can produce, and consume, and really a much deeper discussion around that issue. Timor-Leste also needs to make adjustments to the economy, especially focusing on the country’s economic development,”

Meanwhile, concerning the Political circle, Timor-Leste will have an election next year, 2023 that requires some work to be done before the election:”Timor-Leste must certainly join ASEAN and WTO. We can be saying that it is good progress on the ASEAN discussion process. We may be in next year or the year coming will get a positive signal from ASEAN and they can allow Timor-Leste to join ASEAN,’’

“Timor-Leste should review the sustainable development Goal (SDG) to implement all programs to ensure that in the future, the government can achieve SDG,” he said.

So far, the UN has provided 70 million USD to support Timor-Leste economic development and Sustainable Development Gold (SDG) by 2030.
