FAO and MAF Launched the Bottom Long Line training for fishers in Dili Municipality

DILI, 14 september 2022 ( TATOLI) – The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) today launched a bottom-long line to provide training to fishing groups in Dili on the use of longline fishing equipment for fish bait.

FAO representative, in Timor – Leste, Paula Lopes da Cruz, said the launch of the bottom long line training was to introduce the theory of the bottom long line to fishermen and continue to practice at sea to become professional fishers: “This program can improve their ability to become professionals and improve their economy.”

“FAO also donated US$ 70,000 to MAF through the Directorate of Fisheries to buy the equipment to be used for training, and today we are launching a three-day training from April 14 to April 17, 2022” FAO Representative Paula Lopes da Cruz, told TATOLI at the Bidau Training Center in Dili on Wednesday.

MAF trainer and Coordinator for Dili fisher, Acacio Lopes Ribeiro informed that the three-day training will be attended by 9 groups of fishermen in Dili from Cristo Rei and Dom Aleixo Command Posts.

“Each post will have five fisherman representatives, so from nine groups there will be 45 fishermen involved in this training,” said Ribeiro.

In the same place, the Director General of MAF, Acacio Guterres, thanked FAO for supporting funds to purchase all fishing equipment and urged the trainees to use their time to take advantage of this training.
