DILI, 13 september 2022 (TATOLI) – The Secretary of State for the Environment (SEA) will issue a ban on importing the gases by 2030 responsible for ozone depletion and the greenhouse effect, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).
The statement was said by the Montreal Protocol Focal Point, of the Department of Substance Control for the Reduction of the Ozone Layer of SEA, Mário Ximenes, on the occasion of World Ozone Layer Preservation Day, which is commemorated on 16.
Ximenes explained that Timor-Leste has progressively replaced CFC imports with HCFCs, although the latter is also harmful to the environment, as it contributes to the greenhouse effect.
“Currently there are seven companies that import the gas to Timor-Leste, this year alone 4.3 metric tons have been imported,” said the focal point of Tatoli, in Bebora.
The official also said that SEA has been working closely with customs services to control the import of gases that are harmful to the environment and public health, adding that these gases are commonly used in refrigeration systems, aerosols, and solvents.
Mário Ximenes recalls that Timor-Leste ratified the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol on the Protection of the Ozone Layer in 2009.
