DILI, 23 september 2022 (TATOLI)— Meteorologists of the National Directorate of Meteorology and Geophysics (DNMG) issued an early warning about the prediction of heavy rains that may occur from October to November this year.
“La Niña is an oceanic and atmospheric phenomenon that causes a precocious state during periods of heavy rain. Therefore, there may be heavier and longer rains from time to time. Even so, this phenomenon will not cause heavy rains and strong winds as what happened on April 4 last year, because no tropical cyclone like Seroja has formed in the area near the country”, Simão Fernandes told Tatoli, in Caicoli, Dili.
Fernandes explains that tropical cyclone Seroja occurred last year as it started in the southeast of Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara.
Simão Fernandes also recalled the flash floods that happened in the last two years, killed many lives, and destroyed many infrastructures, while 30,350 had to evacuate to safe places in Dili.
Fernandes explained, based on the latest monitoring data from DNMG, there will be rainfall with an intensity of between 50% and 80% per hour until the end of the year.
“We ask all the residents in Dili to avoid spreading the rumors and stop panic. We pay attention to natural phenomena that can cause heavy rains,” said Fernandes.
Meteorologists also urge the public to follow climate change information on the DNMG website.
Simão Fernandes concluded with a targeted warning: “We also ask all farmers to prepare themselves with the necessary conditions to reduce the destruction of property and goods”.
