Timor-Leste celebrates 20 years of becoming a member of the United Nations

DILI, 24 september 2022 (TATOLI)— The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, together with the Charismatic Leader, Xanana Gusmão, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MNEK), Adaljiza Magno including Timor-Leste delegation, celebrate 20 years of TL as a Member of the United Nations (UN) in New York, United States.

The statement issued by the Office of President in TL, said TL became a member of the United Nations on 23 September 2002, following confirmation at the UN general meeting on 27 September 2002, after the restoration of TL independence on 20 May 2002.

“Timor-Leste has been a member of the United Nations since 2002, which stands with its mission to help all countries in trouble. Missions carried out by the United Nations in TL, such as in the fields of Education, social issues, gender issues and children who have problems and other fields,” said President Horta in a press statement.

President Horta is very proud that TL is a sovereign country with other countries in the world, and has received protection from international organizations that have become a bridge for the development of TL in the past for a better future.

After the event, the Head of State, along with the delegation, continued the bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, and the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen, at the UN headquarters.

The purpose of the meeting was to strengthen bilateral cooperation between TL and New Zealand and Cambodia.

Meanwhile, according to the schedule, President Horta will hold a meeting with the UN General Secretariat, António Guterres in New York, United States.
