Shareef briefs with PM about the IOM’s works in Timor-Leste

DILI, 25 October 2022 (TATOLI)—The Chairman of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in Timor Leste, Aishath Ihma Shareef, today briefing with Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak, about the IOM’s works in Timor-Leste.

Speaking after the meeting, Aishath Ihma Shareef said IOM is part of its mandate to promote various programs on safe and regular orderly migration:” So IOM here in the country to support the number of different programs including border management, diaspora, and labor mobility policies as well as supporting in country’s trafficking activities. these are some of the discussions with the Prime Minister today,” Aishath Ihma Shareef told the media after a meeting with PM Ruak at the Government Palace Dili today.

Asking about the IOM supporting Timorese workers in Portugal, Shareef said, IOM will provide advice and direction to the government on managing migration and ensuring the migrant’s rights.

“IOM continues to provide advice and guidance to the Government of Timor-Leste on managing the migration and ensuring the rights of both migrants as well as back on the state,” she said.

In turn, The Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak hugely appreciated the support of IOM.

Concerning this issue, Recently, Timor-Leste Foreign Minister, Adaljiza Magno said, Timor-Leste wants to collaborate with Portugal to find solutions to the problems of the Timorese people in Portugal, saying, therefore, The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, and his Portuguese counterpart, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will meet to address the recent problems facing Timorese people in Portugal.

So far, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MNEK), registered 5.000 Timorese workers in Portugal, of which around 800 are jobless.
