Asia hosts second higher number of international migrants in the UN region

DILI, 13 december 2022 (TATOLI)– Asia hosted the second higher number of international migrants which is 85.6 million in the UN region after Europe. 

The data record from the International Organization Migration (IOM), highlighted in 2020, 40% of international migrants worldwide, or 115 million were born in Asia while nearly 20% primarily origin from six countries in Asia including China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the Philippines including India the largest country of origin. 

While Mexico is the second largest country of origin and the Russian Federation is the third. several other European countries with sizable populations of emigrants including, Ukraine, Poland the United Kingdom, Romania, and Germany. 

The report stated that the majority of migrants do not migrate across the border and a much larger number migrate inside the county, however, there are a great number of migrants who migrate across the border due to multiple factors. 

“The factors including economic, geographic, demographic and other factors resulting in distinct migration patterns, such as migration “corridors” developed over many years,” the report said. 

Despite Asia hitting the second large number of International Migration in all UN regions, it has a relatively small size of population in each region, and shares of international migrants in 2020 compare to other regions.

“For example, international migrants in Asia are 1.8% and 1.9 %Africa respectively, followed by Latin America and the Caribbean at 2.3%, in comparison to North America and Europe, where international migrants represented, respectively, 22 percent, 16 percent and 12 percent of the total population. These regions were followed by North America, with almost 59 million international migrants in 2020 or 21 percent of the global migrant stock, Africa at 9 percent, Latin America and the Caribbean at 5 percent, and Oceania at 3 percent,” it explained. 

Since North America and Europe represented respectively 22 percent size of the Share of international migrants or the highest number of international migrants, the region hit the first and greatest number of international migrations which is 86.7 million.

The data recorded by IOM stated that the number of international migrants is increased in all regions but has increased to a greater degree in Europe and Asia, with a total having reached 281 million and this number represents about 3.6 percent of the world’s population.

Meanwhile, the report also stated that the United Nation of America has been the main country destination for international migrants since 1970. while German is the second top destination for migrants from 2000 to 2020, the number has increased from 8.6 million to 16 million. 

“The United States of America remained the largest destination, hosting 51 million international migrants in 2020, equal to 18 percent of the world’s total.

Advantage of Disadvantage of Migrants 

A report from the Elibary World Bank Group state that Mingrats have important benefits for the economic development of the destination countries through different impacts of migrants’ skills level.

At this point, migrants’ skills are useful and help the country generate economic growth by fill labor shortages and facilitating skill upgrading. but unlikely to countries with rigid domestic labor market policies, it says immigration can have negative impacts, and certain groups of local workers, particularly low-skilled ones, can be negatively affected by immigration; in origin countries, migrants and remittances can provide an important source of stabilizing income with significant effects on poverty.
