DILI, 27 march 2023 (TATOLI)—The Ministry of Transport and Communication (MTC), through the National Directorate of Meteorology and Geophysics (DNMG), holds a consultation workshop with relevant ministries about the creation of a national framework for climate services.
The Director of DNMG, Terêncio Fernandes, said that the workshop aimed to set up a forum on weather services to share information about climate change with the public.
“So far information related to climate or weather is very different, so this workshop is aimed to introduce the framework of information related to climate change to every sector to provide the right information to the public,” the Director DNMG Terêncio Fernandes, told reporters at City8, Dili, on monday.
According to Fernandes, every sector has collaborated with DNMG to share information about the weather, such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), the Ministry of Health (MoH), MTC through DNMG, and others.
He added each sector that provides information about climate change must go through one source to avoid a situation that may bring panic to the population.
The Green Climate Fund supports a budget of $21.7 million to the Secretary of State for the Environment (SSE) and distributes it to relevant agencies to implement green activities programs including DNMG.
“From the Greening Climate fund worth $ 21.7 million, and allocated to DNMG through Engineering partners worth $ 12.9 million to install the Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS), Weather Doppler Radar and Centro Forecasting System,” he said.
At the same place, the Regional Representative of the Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System for Africa and Asia (RIMES), Carlyne Yu, said that RIMES had been working with DNMG for a long time, through climate green funds.
“Support provided to DNMG, such as increasing knowledge about climate, and how to share information about weather, which can help DNMG. We also support how to provide information about climate change, especially in the marine sector so that it can help fishers concerning ocean currents,” she said.
In addition, RIMES also supports DNMG by establishing an information technology (IT) training center to assist DNMG in gathering information about the weather.
