DILI, 23 June 2023 (TATOLI) – The South Korean Immigration Police have arrested five Timorese for violating immigration rules and finding themselves working illegally in the country.

The information was revealed by the National Director of Employment Abroad, of the State Secretariat for Vocational Training and Employment, Filomeno Soares.

“Timor-Leste Labor Attaché in South Korea has told us that the South Korean police have arrested five of our citizens for working illegally in the fishing area”, Filomeno Soares told Tatoli, in Becora.

Filomeno Soares explained that the five Timorese were detained after the police and an investigation process was conducted by the Korean immigration service and, it seems, will soon be deported to Timor-Leste.

The leader leaves a warning to all Timorese emigrants in South Korea: “Complying with immigration laws and working based on contracts that were established by the governments from both countries”.

The Acting Director of Consular Affairs and Timorese Communities, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, João Braz, said that the Embassy of Timor-Leste in South Korea has already monitoring the case and providing consular assistance to the detained Timorese.

“We advise the Timorese ambassador in South Korea to approach the South Korean authorities to provide consular services to the five Timorese who are going through this situation”, he told Tatoli, in his office in Pantai Kelapa.
