DILI, 10 july 2023 (TATOLI) – The President of SEHAN University, Sung-Hoon Yi, met with the President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, to express his university’s commitment to offering 100 scholarships to the best Timorese high school students.
Yi said that the purpose of the scholarship is to help young Timorese to pursue their degree in the area of industry and technology at SEHAN University – The school opened in 1994, in Jeollanam-do City, South Korea.
“During the meeting, we talked about offering scholarships to Timorese high school students to study at SEAHN University. When these young Timorese complete their studies, they will be immediately recruited to work in the areas of industry and technology,” Yi told reporters after a meeting with the Head of State, in Dili, today.
He said up to 100 of the best high school students will be recruited in 2023 as the first batch of the program: “SEHAN University plans to take up to 1,000 Timorese students next year.”
“These students will be granted D-2-2 visas to study in South Korea. Once they complete their studies, they will get an F-2 visa to work in South Korea. The F-2 visa is a permanent residence visa, allowing Timorese workers to work for a long period of time,” Yi said.
Yi invited the Head of State to visit SEAHN University – a private university located in Yeongam County, South Jeolla, South Korea, and Horta agreed to the invitation, saying he would probably visit the university next year.
The Head of State was very supportive of the program, which is crucial to the development of human resources in preparing Timor-Leste for ASEAN membership.
“President Horta encourages young Timorese with good grades to apply for this scholarship program,” Yi said.
This scholarship program is crucial to strengthen bilateral relations between Timor-Leste and South Korea.
Previously, President Horta said Timor-Leste must intensify bilateral relations with South Korea which will help more Timorese students to study in Korea.
