DILI, 08 november 2023 (TATOLI) – The Guido Valadares National Hospital (HNGV) reported 13 stillbirth cases during last month, said HNGV’s spokesperson Sara Maria Xavier.

Various causes have been reported for these stillbirths, including pregnancy, placental or umbilical cord complications, and genetic problems.

However, Xavier said that intrapartum complications, diabetes, infection, congenital and genetic abnormalities, placental dysfunction, and pregnancy continuing beyond forty weeks can also lead to the birth of a stillborn child.

She said that there are resources available to support mothers through pregnancy loss.

Xavier stressed that pre-pregnancy and prenatal care can help prevent complications and inform women about important steps they can take to protect their infant and ensure a healthy pregnancy.

“With regular prenatal care, women can reduce the risk of pregnancy complications,” said Xavier.

Studies showed that women who smoke during pregnancy, are 41% more likely to have a stillbirth compared to women who do not smoke during pregnancy.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) shares that walking and other moderate exercise during pregnancy may lower the risk of developing gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and even delivering via cesarean delivery, commonly referred to as a C-section.
