DILI, 17 June 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic and Nobel Peace Laureate José Ramos Horta embarked on a private visit to Malaysia from June 17-22 and a working visit to Monaco from June 23-25, 2025, to strengthen Timor-Leste’s international partnerships and advance regional cooperation.

Horta’s visit to Kuala Lumpur focuses on deepening bilateral ties with Malaysia, a key ASEAN partner and longtime supporter of Timor-Leste. The comprehensive program includes participation in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s book launch at Tunku Abdul Rahman Hall, demonstrating the robust bilateral relationship between both nations.

The President will also engage with Taylor’s University through a special academic event and VIP lunch, highlighting educational cooperation opportunities for Timorese students and exploring partnerships in higher education.

“This visit reinforces the historical bonds between Timor-Leste and Malaysia, building upon Malaysia’s crucial support during Timor-Leste’s path to independence and continued partnership in regional development initiatives,” said in a statement.

The President’s working visit to Monaco from June 23-25 emphasizes multilateral diplomacy and youth engagement through several key activities.

Horta will conduct official meetings with Monégasque authorities and participate in high-level diplomatic engagements. A highlight will be an interactive session with over 40 international students, promoting dialogue on global issues and sharing Timor-Leste’s unique development experience.

The program also includes a high-level lunch with 20 distinguished guests and participation in Foundation Prince Albert II activities focused on environmental sustainability and climate action.

President Ramos-Horta commented on the significance of these visits:

“Malaysia has been a steadfast friend to Timor-Leste since our independence struggle, and this visit strengthens our partnership within the ASEAN family. In Monaco, we engage with the broader international community, sharing our nation’s journey while learning from global best practices. These visits exemplify our commitment to active diplomacy that serves our people’s aspirations for development, education, and sustainable prosperity.”

These visits underscore President Ramos-Horta’s ongoing efforts to diversify Timor-Leste’s international partnerships and access new opportunities in education, healthcare, and sustainable development.

President Ramos-Horta is scheduled to return to Timor-Leste on June 27, 2025.
