DILI, 04 June 2025 (TATOLI) – Today, the Government of Timor-Leste, through the Council of Ministers, approved public funding to establish a teacher-training school, called “Escola Superior de Educação – Raiz (ESE-RAIZ).
The proposal was presented by the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Culture, José Honório.
The initiative aims to create a higher education institution exclusively dedicated to training primary and secondary school teachers, with a strong focus on educational excellence and promoting the Portuguese language in the country.
ESE-RAIZ will be initially established within the Timor Catholic University (UCT) as a new autonomous unit with academic, administrative, and financial independence.
A public subsidy of up to one million US dollars annually will be granted to the São Paulo Foundation of the Archdiocese of Díli, the founding body of the Timor Catholic University (UCT). This funding will support the establishment and operation of the new teaching unit, ensuring its academic, administrative, and financial autonomy, as well as accountability and oversight of the project’s implementation.
The Rector of UCT, Father Joel Casimiro Pinto, previously announced that the university will offer 50 scholarships in natural sciences as part of the ESE-RAIZ project.
