DILI, 15 August 2025 (TATOLI) – President and Nobel Peace Laureate, Jose Ramos-Horta, has extended heartfelt condolences to the People’s Republic of China following the catastrophic floods and landslides in Gansu Province and other regions, which have resulted in tragic loss of life, injuries, and extensive material damage.
In an official letter addressed to the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, the Head of State said: “I wish to convey to Your Excellency, the Government, and the people of China my deepest condolences, as well as Timor-Leste’s solidarity during this time of sorrow and adversity.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families, the missing, and the injured, and we wish them strength and a swift recovery. We also commend the tireless efforts of the rescue teams and the measures taken by the Chinese authorities to assist affected communities,” said Ramos-Horta in a letter.
Timor-Leste stands firmly with the people of China in a spirit of friendship and solidarity, confident that the resilience and determination of the Chinese nation will guide the affected regions toward recovery and rebuilding.
According to the Chinese State Media, heavy rains in parts of China between 7 and 8 August triggered floods and landslides, leaving at least 12 people dead, 33 missing, and several others injured.
