DILI, 09 July 2025 (TATOLI) – The Council of Ministers met on Wednesday at the Government Palace in Dili and approved a draft decree-law to establish the Polytechnic Institute of Timor-Leste (IPTL-Portuguese).
The proposal was presented by the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Culture, José Honório da Costa Pereira Jerónimo.
The new institute, IPTL, will replace the current Polytechnic Institute of Betano and will serve as a national-level institution for technical higher education.
The change expands the institute’s mandate while keeping its existing staff, academic activities, and assets, ensuring continuity for the schools that have been operating since 2017.
IPTL will be based in Betano but may manage higher education schools in other municipalities across the country. The government says there are adequate conditions to support the travel and coordination of the institute’s leadership and ensure effective academic and administrative management.
The decree also confirms that IPTL will retain its five-year institutional accreditation, originally granted to the Polytechnic Institute of Betano by the National Agency for Academic Evaluation and Accreditation (ANAAA) under Ministerial Diploma No. 11/2023, dated 19 April.
