DILI, 19 July 2025 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste emphasized the power of sport as a unifying force among Portuguese-speaking nations during the opening ceremony of the 12th edition of the CPLP Sports Games, held for the first time in Dili.
Acting Prime Minister Mariano Assanami Sabino, speaking at the event, said the Games represent more than just a competition: “These games are a commitment to friendship, solidarity, and mutual respect that unite the peoples of the Lusophone world.”
He said this year’s theme, “United We Are One,” reflects the true spirit of the CPLP and the shared values of Portuguese-speaking nations.
“Sport is a powerful tool to empower young people. It promotes discipline, teamwork, and inspires dreams,” he said.
Assanami stressed that in a world marked by uncertainty and division, sport transcends borders, cultures, and languages—becoming a platform for unity and inclusion.
“It’s where young people from our nations come together not as rivals, but as brothers and sisters under the CPLP spirit,” he added.
Meanwhile, Nelyo Isaac, Chair of the Inter-Ministerial Organizing Committee and Minister of Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, called it a historic moment for Timor-Leste as it hosts the largest Lusophone youth multi-sport event for the first time.
“Today, Timor-Leste writes a new chapter in its history. Sport becomes a bridge between cultures, promoting peace and development,” he said, welcoming six participating delegations while expressing regret over the absence of Brazil, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau.
He added that the event gathers more than 500 participants, including 250 athletes, and serves as a platform to promote respect, cooperation, fair play, and team spirit.
“It’s also a chance to showcase Timor-Leste’s natural beauty, warm hospitality, and potential as a cultural, sporting, and tourism destination. Sport inspires our youth and raises our country’s profile on the international stage,” Isaac said.
The minister thanked the organizing institutions, professionals, and volunteers involved, as well as event sponsors. He highlighted Angola’s special cooperation in supporting the delegations of Cabo Verde, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
The opening ceremony took place at Dili’s Municipal Stadium, featuring the parade of delegations from Mozambique, Cabo Verde, Angola, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and host nation Timor-Leste, along with the CPLP flag. The celebration included traditional dances and musical performances.
