President Ramos-Horta Welcomes Australian Minister For International Development, Strengthening Bilateral Ties

DILI, 06 August 2025 (TATOLI) – President José Ramos-Horta welcomed Australia’s Minister for International Development, Anne Aly, at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace on Wednesday, reaffirming the strong and growing partnership between Timor-Leste and Australia.

The meeting highlighted the enduring partnership between Timor-Leste and Australia, with discussions focused on shared development goals, economic collaboration, and Timor-Leste’s imminent accession to ASEAN.

Aly’s visit coincides with the Timor-Leste–Australia Economic and Business Conference (TLAUCON 2025), taking place from August 6–8 at the Dili Convention Center. Co-hosted by the Governments of Timor-Leste and Australia, aims to strengthen economic ties by promoting investment in key sectors, including agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, and mineral resources.

President Ramos-Horta expressed gratitude for Australia’s steadfast support, saying: “Australia has been a steadfast partner in Timor-Leste’s journey toward stability and prosperity. As we prepare to join ASEAN, we value the continued cooperation in trade, investment, and people-to-people ties that will drive sustainable growth for both our nations.”

Australia and Timor-Leste share a long-standing friendship, strengthened by strong people-to-people connections.

Since Timor-Leste’s independence in 2002, Australia has remained its largest development and security partner, the two nations are actively pursuing cooperation in various sectors, including Development, Economic diversification, the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme, major infrastructure projects, Education, Security and Defence, People to people connections, Support for Timor-Leste’s WTO membership and ASEAN accession
