DILI, 04 September 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta, posthumously conferred the Insignia of the Order of Timor-Leste upon two distinguished Priest from Salesian of Don Bosco (SDB), Priest Afonso Nascher and Priest Luiggi Pietro on the occasion of the 26th Anniversary of the Popular Consultation.
The President also awarded the Medal of the Order of Timor-Leste, Medal of Merit, and Certificate of Commendation to Individuals and Organizations for their exceptional contributions to the historic success of the First Apostolic visit of His Holiness Pope Francisco to Timor-Leste. The Ceremony was held at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, on Thursday.
Under the Decree of the President of The Republic No. 88/2025, signed on September 2, 2025, President Ramos-Horta posthumously bestowed the Insignia of the Order of Timor-Leste upon two Salesian of Don Bosco (SDB) priests, in recognition of the priests’ profound and dedicated service in fostering the historic relations between Timor-Leste and the Vatican, which has been fundamental to promoting peace, national stability, and development.
Their lifelong efforts provided immense benefit and comfort to countless Timorese citizens.
Furthermore, under Presidential Decree No. 89/2025, signed on September 2, 2025, President Ramos-Horta awarded national honors to numerous individuals and groups for their exceptional contributions to the historic success of the Apostolic Visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to Timor-Leste in September 2024.
The Medal of the Order of Timor-Leste is awarded to seven distinguished individuals for their leadership. The Medal of Merit is awarded to twenty-five civilian and military personnel, and a Certificate of Commendation is awarded to 182 individuals and several major organizations, including media outlets and telecommunications providers.
Ramos-Horta stated: “On this day of national reflection, we honor both the foundational pillars of our past and the dedicated architects of our present. The light of faith, compassion, and unwavering service shown by Fathers Nascher and Pietro guided our people through moments of profound darkness.”
He said that their legacy is forever woven into the fabric of Timor-Leste’s story.
“We also celebrate the remarkable work of the honorees whose collective effort made the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis a resounding success. They demonstrated to the world the peace, stability, and unity of the Timorese nation. Together, these awards ensure that the memory of these good works will continue to inspire generations of Timorese to come,” he added.
The ceremony served as a moment for the nation to reflect on the sacrifices made by many, from all walks of life, who contributed to Timor-Leste’s independence and enduring spirit.
