DILI, 10 September 2025 (TATOLI) – The Australian Embassy in Timor-Leste has warned the Timorese people about scams linked to visa applications, particularly the Pacific Engagement Visa (PEV) scheme.
The embassy’s official website issued a warning to Timorese citizens, particularly young job seekers pursuing opportunities in Australia, to stay vigilant against ballot and visa scams targeting them.
“To protect yourself from visa scams you should only deal with official Australian Government information channels, such as the Department of Home Affairs or DFAT websites or with the official PEV Support Service in Timor-Leste,” the Embassy said in a satement.
The Embassy also urge the applicants visit https://www.pev.gov.au or contact the PEV Support Service at Timorleste@pevsupport.com.au for information.
The PEV (subclass 192) grants permanent residency to citizens of Pacific countries and Timor-Leste, with up to 3,000 visas issued annually through a public ballot.
Applicants must register via the ImmiAccount platform and pay a fee of AU$25, around US$16 US.
Those selected are invited to submit a formal visa application and can include immediate family members.
Eligibility requirements include a formal job offer in Australia, as well as health, character and English language checks.
Full details are available on www.pev.gov.au and the Department of Home Affairs website.
Successful candidates will have free access to employment services, including job information sessions, CV preparation, interview coaching and connections with potential employers.
On arrival, visa holders can also access settlement support, such as English classes under the Adult Migrant English Program and community services through the Settlement Engagement and Transition Support scheme.
They are entitled to benefits including Medicare, subsidised medicines, public education and financial assistance for students and families.
The programme is open to citizens of Timor-Leste, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Kiribati.
Registration for the 2025 ballot closed on 25 August, with the selection process running from 1 September to 1 February 2026.
Those chosen will be officially notified by email with instructions for submitting their visa applications.
