DILI, 14 September 2025 (TATOLI)  – Timor-Leste’s President, Jose Ramos-Horta has strongly condemned a recent Israeli attack in Doha, Qatar, which targeted a Hamas negotiation delegation.

The attack, which took place on September 9, 2025, resulted in multiple fatalities, including civilians and Qatari security personnel.

In a press statement, Timor-Leste’s President Ramos-Horta expressed his “firm and absolute condemnation” of Israel’s September 9, 2025 attack in Doha, which targeted a Hamas delegation negotiating a ceasefire and the release of hostages.

The president described the incident as an “incomprehensible act” and a “flagrant violation of Qatar’s sovereignty.”

He emphasized that the strike was a direct blow to the peace mediation efforts led by Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

“Timor-Leste expresses its solidarity with the families of the victims and with the State of Qatar, a brotherly country that, with courage and dedication, has played a crucial role in seeking a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages,” Ramos-Horta said.

Horta reiterated his condemnation of “the genocide and ethnic cleansing being perpetrated in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank” by the Israeli Armed Forces, as crimes that shock the universal conscience and which, under no circumstances, can be relativized or justified.

He criticized the “complicit indifference of Western political elites” and what he described as the “hypocritical and racist indifference” of nations that provide weapons to the perpetrators.

The President highlighted the responsibility of Hamas for crimes against both Israeli civilians and Palestinian patriots, but stressed that such “vile actions” as the Doha strike are not the way to achieve justice.

The attack in Doha was called an “unprecedented escalation” that has been widely condemned by regional and international leaders. The president aligned his country with the voices of the international community, including the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, Pope Leo XIV, and the governments of Qatar, Egypt, and several European nations. All agree the attack violates international law and sabotages peace efforts.

Ramos-Horta urged the international community to intensify efforts for an immediate ceasefire, the protection of innocent civilians, and the establishment of a “just and lasting political solution for Palestine.”

“I inform that a letter of solidarity has been sent to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, in solidarity with the People of Qatar,” the Head of State Concluded.
