DILI, 17 September 2025 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste’s President, José Ramos-Horta, praised China’s significant contribution to his nation’s development during a ceremony celebrating the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The event was held at the Chinese Embassy in Dili.
In his speech, President Ramos-Horta underscored the deep historical ties between the two nations, emphasizing a robust friendship forged over 23 years of formal diplomatic relations, grounded in mutual respect, cooperation, and equality.
The Head of State said China was the first permanent member of the UN Security Council to recognize Timor-Leste’s sovereignty in 1975. This support was crucial in helping the newly independent state consolidate its foundation.
He reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s commitment to a comprehensive strategic partnership with China, one that aims to build a shared future.
The President detailed China’s essential contributions, including over US$105 million in grants for infrastructure. He also cited vital support during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the construction of a military hospital and the rehabilitation of Dili’s coastal areas with public gardens and sports facilities.
During the ceremony, Ramos-Horta announced that Timor-Leste’s government has decided to open a new Consulate-General in Changsha, Hunan Province. This consulate will also have jurisdiction over Guangdong Province, further strengthening Timor-Leste’s diplomatic presence in China.
Ramos-Horta also stressed the need for both nations to work together to address global challenges, from climate change to humanitarian crises. He called for promoting international peace and stability and reinforcing the role of the United Nations.
On security and defense, Ramos-Horta noted an increase in cooperation, including specialized training, joint exercises, and military and police exchanges. He described this collaboration as essential for regional protection and development.
In her address, China’s Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Wang Wenli, highlighted her country’s economic advancements. She reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to supporting Timor-Leste.
The Ambassador said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations, cooperation has deepened in areas like economics, trade, investment, agriculture, and culture.
She said that this year, 46 scholarships were awarded to Timorese people to study at the Chinese universities.
Wang Wenli also stated that Timor-Leste and China share a common responsibility in promoting peace and stability in Asia.
The ceremony concluded with Ramos-Horta toasting to the “eternal friendship between Timor-Leste and China.” He wished for the relationship to continue to flourish, inspiring future generations and consolidating peace, progress, and prosperity for both nations.
