DILI, 24 September 2025 (TATOLI) – Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão and his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and urged peaceful solutions to the crises in Myanmar and Palestine.

The two leaders made the call on the second day of Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to Timor-Leste, during a meeting at the Government Palace in Dili.

Xanana Gusmão said both countries share the same vision on Myanmar and Palestine.

“On Myanmar, both nations reaffirm the importance of ASEAN unity and the Five-Point Consensus in advancing peace and democracy. On Palestine, we share a common position to end violence, uphold international law, and ensure a just solution that recognizes the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination,” he said.

The Timorese leader described Anwar Ibrahim’s visit as an honor and a milestone in bilateral friendship, which has grown since diplomatic ties were established in 2002.

Their meeting also focused on expanding cooperation in trade and investment, health, tourism, scholarships, and air connectivity.

On Myanmar, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted what he called “visible progress with ASEAN support.” He praised initial steps by the Myanmar authorities, including halting bombings and allowing non-discriminatory humanitarian assistance. He noted Malaysia’s role in setting up field hospitals and deploying military teams to aid victims.

“We are working with Thailand and Cambodia to prevent further escalation of violence. All of this is being done with ASEAN’s support. I also want to thank Prime Minister Xanana for his strong backing of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus,” Anwar said.

On Palestine, the Malaysian leader reiterated his country’s firm stance against Israel’s military actions in Gaza. He condemned continued bombardments despite global calls for a ceasefire and recognition of Palestinian statehood.

“Coming from Timor-Leste, a nation that deeply understands the meaning of the struggle for independence, we greatly value your position in defending the rights of the Palestinian people,” he added.
