DILI, 09 October 2025 (TATOLI) – Eleven young Timorese students departed today for Portugal to pursue higher education at various Portuguese institutions, the Executive Director of the Human Capital Development Fund (FDCH), Júlio Aparício, announced.

Eight of the scholarship recipients will study at the University of Minho. Among them, one will pursue a PhD in Portuguese as a Non-Native Language—the only doctoral-level student in the group—while five will take master’s degrees in Mathematics and two will enroll in Medicine.

Two other students will attend the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria to study Portuguese Language, and one will pursue studies at the Catholic University of Lisbon.

According to Aparício, five of the scholars are funded by Camões – Institute for Cooperation and Language, I.P., with the FDCH covering their airfare. The remaining six students are fully funded by the FDCH.

“For the six students under our full sponsorship, FDCH covers tuition fees, living expenses, airfare, health insurance, and study materials,” Aparício told Tatoli.

The FDCH has allocated approximately US$14 million for scholarships in 2025, underscoring the government’s continued investment in developing the nation’s human capital.
