DILI, 13 October 2025 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste National University (UNTL) has suspended a lecturer accused of sexual harassment at the Faculty of Social Sciences (FCS), following student protests erupted last week.

Minister of Higher Education, Science and Culture José Honório said the decision on Monday following a meeting with UNTL leadership to address the case.

“The lecturer has been suspended and is prohibited from teaching while the investigation is ongoing. Whether he will remain in his position will depend on the outcome of the process, as all decisions concerning public servants rest with the Public Service Commission [CFP],” the minister stated.

He urged the university to expedite administrative procedures and ensure the safety and protection of students.

“The Disciplinary Council has already sent a letter to the Public Service Commission [CFP], and it is the commission that must make a decision regarding the lecturer’s conduct. I urge the university to ensure the protection of students, as only those who genuinely wish to study should be there, and they must be respected,” Honório said.

“The Disciplinary Council has already sent a letter to the Public Service Commission [CFP], and it is the commission that must decide on the appropriate action regarding the lecturer’s conduct. I urge the university to ensure the protection of students, as only those who genuinely wish to study should be present, and they must be respected,” he said.

The minister also encouraged students to report any incidents of harassment to the appropriate authorities and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing such cases. “Enquanto Ministro do Ensino Superior, devo encarar esta situação com seriedade. O MESSC já assinou um acordo com a UN Women para tratar adequadamente casos deste tipo,” he added.

The lecturer was publicly accused on 6 October by students from the Faculty of Social Sciences during a press conference, where they demanded his dismissal.

The case has now been referred to the CFP, which will determine the disciplinary measures.
