DILI, 17 October 2025 (TATOLI) – CARE in Timor-Leste is proud to host a special event in Balibo, Bobonaro Municipality, celebrating the transformative impact of the Lafaek Project. In the event, New Zealand Ambassador to Timor-Leste, and President of the Bobonaro Municipal Authority, will join CARE and local leaders to distribute the latest edition of Lafaek Magazine to students, teachers, and families.

The event will take place at EBF.1.2 Weclese School, Balibo Administrative Post, and will highlight the enduring partnership between CARE Timor-Leste, the Government of New Zealand, and the Ministry of Education of Timor-Leste.

Since 2001, the Lafaek Project has worked to improve the quality of education, strengthen leadership, and promote inclusive governance and family well-being. With support from the New Zealand Government, the project distributes Lafaek Magazine to over 245,000 students in pre-school and grades 1–6, more than 10,000 teachers, and 104,000 households across Timor-Leste.

“The New Zealand Government is proud to stand alongside Timor-Leste in supporting education. When we work together as a team, from teachers and students to our local partners, we can make a real difference, helping children learn, dream, and become the future leaders of Timor-Leste,” said Helen Jane Tunnah, New Zealand Ambassador to Timor-Leste.

Speaking at the event, CARE in Timor-Leste’s Country Director, Peter Goodfellow highlighted the project’s reach and commitment to social justice: “Lafaek is more than a magazine; it’s a powerful tool for equity and inclusion. By reaching hundreds of thousands of students, teachers, and households, especially in rural municipalities like Bobonaro, we’re helping close educational gaps and amplify voices that are often left behind.”

This event includes a symbolic handover of Lafaek Magazine Edition 3/2025, and a live demonstration of how the magazine is used in classrooms by the Lafaek Impact Group. It reaffirms CARE’s continued commitment to improving education outcomes and ensuring that every child in Timor-Leste has access to quality learning materials, no matter where they live.
