Timor-Leste congratulates Sanae Takaichi on becoming Japan’s first female Prime Minister

DILI, 23 October 2025 (TATOLI) — The Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste has extended its congratulations to Sanae Takaichi on her appointment and inauguration as Prime Minister of Japan on 21 October 2025, marking the first time in the country’s history that a woman has assumed the position.

In an official letter addressed to his Japanese counterpart, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão conveyed, on behalf of the Government and people of Timor-Leste, his “warmest congratulations” on her appointment. He emphasized that “her leadership as Japan’s first female Prime Minister represents a historic milestone and reflects the enduring strength of Japanese democracy and the confidence of the Japanese people in her vision and service.”

Prime Minister Gusmão also highlighted Japan’s role as “one of Timor-Leste’s key development partners,” noting that “Japan has made a profound contribution to peacebuilding and state-building efforts since independence, and its friendship has supported Timor-Leste’s emergence as a peaceful democracy with an open society, a growing economy, and deep respect for international law.”

He reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s commitment to “working closely with the new Japanese Government to further deepen cooperation and advance the shared commitment to peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.”

Government Spokesperson and Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Agio Pereira, underscored that “the relationship between Timor-Leste and Japan is founded on strong friendship and a shared commitment to peace and development.” He added that the Government of Timor-Leste is confident that “under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s leadership, Japan will continue to play a vital role in promoting stability and sustainable growth in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as in strengthening bilateral cooperation.”
