Vice Prime Minister Mariano Assanami Sabino Promotes Youth Journalism and Children’s Education through the Lafaek Magazine

DILI, 14 November 2025  (TATOLI) –  The Vice Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for Social Affairs and Minister of Rural Development and Community Housing, Mariano Assanami Sabino was interviewed by three young journalists on 10 November 2025 on the subject of education in Timor-Leste, including the role of the Lafaek Magazine in promoting literacy and leadership among youth. During the interview, the three student journalists gained insights into the Vice Prime Minister’s leadership journey and his vision for the future of education in Timor-Leste.

The meeting, hosted by CARE in Timor-Leste through the Lafaek project, provided space for discussion on the importance of parental engagement in reading with children at home. Since its launch in 2001, the Lafaek Magazine has become a vital educational resource in rural areas, used by students, parents and teachers across the country.

During the interview, the Vice Prime Minister encouraged the student journalists to prepare themselves to become better leaders in the future. One of the young journalists commented: “We are pleased to hear directly from the Vice Prime Minister about his experiences during the struggle for independence, as well as his insights on leadership and decision-making. His words and experiences can serve as a source of motivation for us moving forward.”

Vice Prime Minister Mariano Assanami Sabino shared an inspirational message with the students: “Everyone must live equally—boys and girls, no matter their circumstances. All children must go to school, especially girls. The more girls learn and grow through education, the stronger our country will be.” He continued by emphasizing the importance of educational resources in the national language: “Lafaek Magazine in Tetum helps children learn and speak proper Tetun. By sharing knowledge in a way they understand, we are investing in future leaders.”

“We are very happy to support Lafaek magazine, especially in helping young people learn through the Tetun language, as well as supporting schools and communities across the country. We are also pleased to contribute to preschool and early childhood education in Timor-Leste, which is essential for shaping the future,” said Helen Tunnah, Ambassador of New Zealand to Timor-Leste.

CARE in Timor-Leste expressed its appreciation for the Vice Prime Minister’s continued support of the Lafaek Project and his commitment to youth empowerment. The initiative is delivered in partnership with the Ministry of Education and generously supported by the Government of New Zealand.
