DILI, 16 November 2025 (TATOLI) – Timorese students studying in Guangzhou proudly promoted the culture and identity of Timor-Leste at the 2025 Southern Medical University (SMU) International Cultural Festival – an annual event that brings together students from around the world to celebrate diversity and creativity.
During the event on November 13, 2025, Timorese students showcased traditional cuisine, clothing, and cultural narratives that captivated both local and international participants. Their presence highlighted Timor-Leste’s heritage and strengthened cultural understanding within the global academic community.
One of the main attractions was the Timorese food stall, where visitors enjoyed a variety of traditional dishes prepared by the students. The stall quickly became a popular stop for guests eager to taste authentic Timorese flavors and learn the cultural stories behind each dish. This direct engagement allowed festival-goers to appreciate the richness of Timor-Leste’s gastronomic traditions.
The students also participated in the Cultural Gala Fashion Show, presenting traditional Timorese attire such as Buibere and Maubere garments. Their performance, filled with pride and cultural symbolism, highlighted the elegance and depth of Timor-Leste’s traditional clothing, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
The Embassy of Timor-Leste in China supported the students’ participation, emphasizing the importance of cultural diplomacy and the role of Timorese youth abroad as informal cultural ambassadors. The Embassy continues to encourage students to share the nation’s values and traditions on international platforms.
Esmeraldito Ferreira, a Master’s student, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent Timor-Leste.
“It is an honor to promote our national culture at a festival of this scale. Every element we present – from food to clothing – carries part of our identity. This event helps strengthen unity among Timorese students overseas while introducing our heritage to the world,” Ferreira stated in a press release issued during the event and accessed by TATOLI today.
Likewise, Julio de Carvalho Pinto, a Master’s student, shared his experience as a newcomer to China. “Despite being new here, I feel welcomed thanks to the strong Timorese community. Working together to showcase our culture makes us feel connected to home. Through food, attire, and cultural exchange, we carry the spirit of Timor-Leste wherever we go.”
The participation of Timorese students in the SMU International Cultural Festival reflects their commitment to promoting national identity and cultural values. Their involvement not only enhances the visibility of Timor-Leste internationally but also fosters pride among the diaspora and strengthens the country’s cultural diplomacy efforts.
