Pope Leo calls for peace, justice, and protection of human rights in Venezuela

DILI, 05 january 2026 (TATOLI) – Pope Leo XIV expressed deep concern over the ongoing developments in Venezuela, urging all parties to prioritize the well-being of the Venezuelan people.

Speaking in St. Peter’s Square, he stressed that the welfare of citizens must take precedence over all other considerations, calling for an end to violence and a commitment to justice and peace.

Pope Leo’s remarks came after a U.S. military operation that led to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on January 3, urging respect for Venezuela’s sovereignty and stressing the need to uphold the constitutional rule of law.

“The good of the beloved Venezuelan people must prevail over every other consideration and lead us to overcome violence and to undertake paths of justice and peace, safeguarding the country’s sovereignty, ensuring the rule of law enshrined in the Constitution, respecting the human and civil rights of each person and of all, and working to build together a serene future of collaboration, stability, and concord, with special attention to the poorest who suffer because of the difficult economic situation,” said the Pope at the midday Angelus prayer,” said the Pope at the midday Angelus prayer.

Pope Leo called on the faithful around the world to pray for the people of Venezuela.

The Pope ended his Angelus message by encouraging everyone to place their trust in the God of Peace.

“Let us continue to have faith in the God of peace. Let us pray and stand in solidarity with the peoples who suffer because of wars,” the Pope urged.
