DILI, 27 january 2026 (TATOLI) – The Timor-Leste Consumer Protection Association (TANE Konsumidor) has revealed widespread violations in local shops and supermarkets, including the relabeling of expired food products.

The findings came after inspections of around 250 stores in Dili at the end of last year.

TANE Konsumidor President, Robin Araújo said some shops used stickers to hide expiry dates on items such as bread, sweets, and fish.

“We conducted monitoring in approximately 250 shops and supermarkets. Our work will continue, and we hope authorities take stronger action to prevent the manipulation of expiry dates,” he said at a press conference in Bairro Pité on monday.

The inspections also found that many shops were not using cash registers, which are essential for transparent accounting and efficient customer service. Araújo asked, “How can consumers return or exchange a product if they do not receive a receipt?”

Other irregularities included extremely short warranties on electronic products. Araújo reminded consumers that under Law No. 08/2026, all electronic products must have a minimum one-year warranty.

TANE Konsumidor also reported that some stores were selling food items alongside construction materials, without proper separation.

Araújo urged shop owners, especially those of Chinese origin, to install cash registers to provide receipts and better service for customers.

TANE Konsumidor also called on authorities, including the Economic and Sanitary Inspection and Monitoring Authority (AIFAESA), to intensify efforts to prevent practices that harm consumers.
