DILI, 25 february 2026 (TATOLI) – On the sidelines of the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta held an informal meeting with the Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, on february 23, 2026.
During the encounter, the Head of State expressed Timor-Leste’s high regard for President João Lourenço’s leadership of the African Union, specifically commending Angola’s proactive efforts in promoting peace, stability, and security throughout the African continent.
President Ramos-Horta underscored the profound historical and political affinities between Timor-Leste and Angola, rooted in their shared struggles for independence and the ongoing consolidation of the Rule of Law.
The Head of State reaffirmed the importance of multilateralism and cooperation among nations that uphold common values, such as national sovereignty, the self-determination of peoples, and the global promotion of human rights.
Looking toward the future, both parties expressed a keen interest in deepening bilateral relations and reinforcing South-South cooperation across diplomatic, economic, and cultural domains.
The leaders also recognized the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) as a vital platform for political-diplomatic concertation, emphasizing its role in promoting the Portuguese language and defending shared interests within international multilateral forums.
President Ramos-Horta and Minister Teté António also reaffirmed the strengthening of bilateral relations between Timor-Leste and Angola, particularly in consolidating South-South cooperation in the areas of economy and diplomacy.
The President of the Republic was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas.
