DILI, 05 March 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, on Thursday swore in Jesuína Gomes as Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation during a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Dili.
The event was attended by Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão and several members of the government.
During the ceremony, Ramos-Horta praised the newly appointed vice minister for her integrity, competence, and extensive experience in governance, human rights, and international cooperation.
He said her background would help strengthen Timor-Leste’s partnerships abroad and promote the country’s national interests on the global stage.
“I am confident that she will serve the nation with distinction in her new role,” the president said.
Ramos-Horta noted that he had worked closely with Gomes when she served as Chief of Staff of the Presidency’s Civil House, saying he had witnessed her dedication, strong work ethic, and deep commitment to the Timorese people.
“I witnessed firsthand her dedication, work ethic and profound commitment to our people, which makes her exceptionally qualified for this important position,” he added.
The president explained that Gomes’ appointment followed a joint initiative between the presidency and Foreign Affairs Minister Bendito Freitas, in response to the growing responsibilities of the ministry.
According to Ramos-Horta, the current international environment and the increasing demands associated with Timor-Leste’s full accession to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations require greater diplomatic capacity.
Beyond its obligations within ASEAN, Timor-Leste maintains bilateral relations with numerous countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America, making the ministry’s agenda increasingly complex.
Ramos-Horta also noted that Vice Minister for ASEAN Affairs Milena Rangel is currently focused on matters related to the regional bloc. In this context, Gomes has been appointed to oversee internal affairs within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
“The minister faces an overload of responsibilities, with limited availability to directly oversee all aspects of the internal management of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation,” Ramos-Horta said.
