Timor-Leste receives invitation to attend ASEAN–Russia summit in 2026

DILI, 16 March 2026 (TATOLI) — The Ambassador of Russia to Timor-Leste and Indonesia, Sergei Tolchenov, delivered an official invitation to President José Ramos-Horta to participate in the upcoming ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit.

The invitation was presented during an audience with the head of state at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace in Dili on Monday. According to the diplomat, the invitation was also extended to other Timorese leaders.

“I delivered an invitation to the President and the leaders of Timor-Leste to participate in the Russia–ASEAN commemorative summit,” said Sergei Tolchenov.

During the meeting, the ambassador emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional contacts to deepen diplomatic relations across several sectors.

“We discussed several topics of bilateral cooperation, such as education, the fight against international crime and military cooperation. I hope that we can have more contacts this year to promote our bilateral interactions in different areas,” he added.

The summit between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and Russia is expected to take place in May 2026 in Russia, although the exact date and location have not yet been officially confirmed.

The meeting will mark the 35th anniversary of dialogue relations between Moscow and the Southeast Asian regional bloc and will bring together leaders to strengthen political, economic and security cooperation between the two sides.
