DILI, 24 March 2026 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste took a significant step toward modernizing its trade sector with the official opening of the National Workshop on Digital Commerce, held Tuesday at the Timor Plaza Hotel in Dili.

Vice Minister of Commerce and Industry, Augusto Júnior Trindade, officially opened the event, which was organized in partnership with the ASEAN-UK Economic Integration Programme (EIP).

The workshop brought together government officials, private sector representatives, and international partners to discuss the implementation of Transferable Electronic Records (MLETR) and strategies to accelerate trade modernization.

Speaking at the opening, Vice Minister Trindade emphasized the country’s strong legal foundation while underlining the importance of practical application:

“This workshop is a crucial step in transforming our legislation into action, enabling a faster, more efficient, and transparent trading system,” he said.

The workshop aims to identify current challenges, enhance institutional coordination, and outline actionable measures for the digitalization of trade. Organizers stressed that aligning Timor-Leste’s efforts with ASEAN regional initiatives will promote efficiency, inclusivity, and competitiveness in the national economy.

By fostering collaboration among domestic and international stakeholders, Timor-Leste seeks to reinforce regional integration and support the development of a modern trade environment that benefits businesses and consumers alike.
