DILI, 09 April 2026 (TATOLI) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the provisional two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, describing it as a positive step toward easing tensions in the Middle East.
In a statement, Guterres urged all parties involved in the conflict to fully respect the terms of the agreement and adhere to international law.
He emphasized the importance of restraint and compliance to prevent further escalation and pave the way for peace in the region.
“While the UN Secretary-General has welcomed the move as a step toward a broader peace,” said in a statement.
On Wednesday, the United Nations said its Personal Envoy for the Middle East, Jean Arnault, had arrived in Tehran to support efforts toward a comprehensive and lasting peace settlement.
Guterres stressed that an immediate end to the fighting without delay is essential to safeguard civilians and ease the humanitarian toll of the ongoing crisis.
The UN chief commended mediation efforts led by Pakistan and other countries to help secure the ceasefire agreement.
Despite the ceasefire, a wave of Israeli airstrikes has continued across Lebanon, with Israel saying it is not bound by the agreement, despite insistence from key mediator Pakistan that it is included.
