Timor-Leste, South Korea discuss strengthening education cooperation

DILI, 10 April 2026 (TATOLI) — South Korea’s ambassador to Timor-Leste, Chang Ha Yeon, met the education minister, Dulce de Jesus Soares on Friday to discuss ongoing development programs supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and explore future cooperation.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Education, marked the ambassador’s first official engagement with Education Minister Dulce Soares, focusing on aligning existing projects with the government’s priorities.

“Today I met with the education minister to discuss KOICA’s ongoing programs in Timor-Leste and to hear the ministry’s views on how to align future initiatives,” Ambassador Chang Ha Yeon said.

Minister Soares said the visit provided an opportunity to review current cooperation and discuss potential new initiatives aimed at improving education quality nationwide.

She said KOICA and the Ministry of Education have four projects in Timor-Leste, including the construction of a printing facility equipped with printing equipment, the provision of laboratory equipment at the Becora Vocational Technical School, collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to build 14 kindergarten facilities, and partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) to implement school feeding programs in the municipalities of Baucau, Bobonaro, Manufahi and Viqueue

The minister also expressed gratitude to the South Korean government for its continued support of education programs in Timor-Leste.
