DILI, 27 April 2026 (TATOLI) — President José Ramos-Horta has been invited to attend a special session marking the International Day of the Portuguese Language, part of the 14th Meeting of Education Ministers of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, scheduled for May 7.

The invitation was conveyed by Education Minister Dulce Soares following a meeting with the head of state at the Presidential Palace in Dili.

The minister said Ramos-Horta was briefed on the broader program, which will include seminars, technical meetings and the ministerial session, bringing together education officials from CPLP member states.

The event will be held under the theme Education, democratic values, and civic participation: pathways to strengthening CPLP societies”

According to Soares, the program will begin on May 4, featuring experts from CPLP countries selected by the organization’s secretariat. A large-scale celebration of the International Day of the Portuguese Language is planned for May 5 in Timor-Leste.

On May 6, education focal points from CPLP member states are due to meet ahead of the official opening of the ministers’ meeting on May 7.

Dulce Soares noted that, in line with institutional practice, such ministerial meetings do not typically involve the head of state. However, José Ramos-Horta is expected to attend the ceremonial session and cultural events marking the International Day of the Portuguese Language.

The 14th CPLP Education Ministers Meeting is part of ongoing multilateral cooperation in education, aimed at strengthening policy coordination and the exchange of experiences among member countries.
