Government extends Major Disaster Declaration for another 60 days

DILI, 31 may 2021 (TATOLI)- The Government’s Council of Minister renewed the Major Disaster Declaration to deal with the recent flooding in Timor-Leste for 60 days.

The President for the Council of Ministers (PCM), Fidelis Magalhães said, Government approved this declaration to deal with the natural calamity that had happened recently in Timor-Leste caused by Tropical Cyclone Seroja.

It is recalled that, on May 29, 2021, the Minister of State Administration, Miguel Pereira Carvalho, also the Coordinator for the Mission Unit of Civil Protection and Management of Natural Disasters, had presented the point of impacts of the floods and the recovery actions.

In Dili, 4,356 people remain in seven evacuated centers. While a total of 31,337 families have been affected by the floods and 41 people have died and remained missing.

Following the reports, 27,178 homes were washed away by the water. Regarding public infrastructure, 22 roads and 11 bridges were destroyed during the natural disaster.
