DILI, 04 May 2026 (TATOLI) —Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL) on Sunday seized 12 air rifles during a joint border operation in Bobonaro Municipality.
The joint operation was carried out by PNTL’s National Intelligence Service and members of the Timor-Leste Defence Force.
Bobonaro Police Commander Chief Inspector Damião da Silva Correia said the 12 Sharp Tiger pump air guns were being transported by motorcycle from the Tapo-Memu border area and were allegedly intended for sale in other municipalities.
He said the attempted smuggling of the rifles falls under the category of firearms-related crimes under Law No. 05/2017.
Damião said the suspect is being interrogated and will be handed over to the Prosecutor’s Office for further legal proceedings.
He said PNTL and F-FDTL would continue working with the Bobonaro municipal government and community leaders to strengthen border security and prevent smuggling activities.
The operation is part of the government’s commitment to strengthen measures aimed at preventing arms trafficking into the country.
Damião said police would also cooperate with authorities in Ermera, Ainaro and other municipalities to enhance surveillance and combat the circulation of illegal firearms.
