DILI, 18 May 2026 (TATOLI) – ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn undertakes a working visit to Timor-Leste from 19 to 20 May, 2026 to attend celebrations marking the country’s 24th anniversary of the restoration of independence on May 20.
Dr. Kao visits Timor-Leste at the invitation of Foreign Minister and Cooperation Minister Bendito dos Santos Freitas. It marks Dr. Kao’s first visit to the country since Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN last year.
During the visit, Dr. Kao is scheduled to meet President José Ramos-Horta, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, and Foreign Minister Bendito dos Santos Freitas. These engagements will reaffirm ASEAN’s continued support for Timor-Leste’s full and effective membership in ASEAN.
Dr. Kao will also participate and deliver remarks at the Ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the International Convention Center (ICC), in Dili.
Dr. Kao’s first visit to the country took place in 2024, when he met a number of Timorese leaders, including President José Ramos-Horta.
