Hungary’s new government commits to deepening cooperation with Timor-Leste

DILI, 19 May 2026 (TATOLI) – The new government of Hungary, led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar, has pledged to further strengthen cooperation with Timor-Leste across key sectors.

The commitment was conveyed by Hungary’s outgoing ambassador to Timor-Leste and Indonesia, Lilla Karsay, during a meeting with Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão at the Government Palace in Dili on Monday.

The meeting also served as a farewell courtesy call, as Ambassador Karsay is nearing the end of her diplomatic mission.

During the meeting, she had assured the Prime Minister that the new Hungarian government is committed to strengthening relations with Timor-Leste, particularly in “higher education and vocational training.”

She added that both sides also discussed potential cooperation in water treatment technology and agriculture, including the development of more resilient hybrid crops aimed at improving agricultural productivity in Timor-Leste.

According to Karsay, the discussions included a review of progress in bilateral relations since their last meeting in November, including the opening of Hungary’s honorary consulate in Dili, which she described as a significant milestone in diplomatic ties.

Karsay added that she would continue to support efforts to strengthen ties between the two countries even after returning to Hungary.
