DILI, 25 June 2026 (TATOLI) — The Embassy of Timor-Leste in the Republic of Korea has opened a Book of Condolence to honor former President Francisco Guterres “Lú-Olo”, who died on June 21 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Lú-Olo served as Timor-Leste’s sixth president from 2017 to 2022. He also served as President of the National Parliament, President of the Constituent Assembly, and was a veteran of the country’s independence struggle.
The condolence book was opened as Timor-Leste observes a period of national mourning declared by the government following the former president’s death.
The national flag at the Timorese Embassy in Seoul is being flown at half-mast in tribute to the late statesman.
Members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organizations, and friends of Timor-Leste have been invited to sign the Book of Condolence at the embassy through June 26.
Timor-Leste Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, António de Sá Benevides, expressed appreciation to members of the diplomatic community and friends of Timor-Leste who have paid tribute to the former president.
Ambassadors and representatives from the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Gabon, Qatar, and other diplomatic missions accredited to South Korea have signed the Book of Condolence.
Benevides said the embassy would continue receiving diplomats, representatives of international organizations, and members of the public wishing to convey their condolences and respect.
On behalf of the bereaved family, the embassy and its staff, Benevides extended condolences to the family of the late president, the FRETILIN Party, and the people of Timor-Leste.
“President Lú-Olo dedicated his life to the struggle for freedom, unity, and sovereignty of the Timorese people. His legacy of courage, humility, and commitment to public service will continue to inspire future generations,” said the ambassador. “In this moment of sorrow, the Embassy stands in solidarity and prayer with all who knew and worked with him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Lú Olo will be laid to rest on Friday, June 26, 2026, at the Garden of Heroes and Martyrs of the Homeland in Metinaro, Dili, the resting place of many of Timor-Leste’s leading independence heroes.
