Prime Minister Gusmão mourns former President “Lú Olo”, honors his enduring legacy

DILI, 25 June 2026 (TATOLI) — Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão has paid tribute to former President Francisco Guterres “Lú Olo”, praising his contributions to Timor-Leste’s struggle for independence and the consolidation of the country’s democratic institutions.

In a condolence message, the Prime Minister expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the former head of state.

“We remember his contribution to the struggle for national independence and the consolidation of the State’s democratic institutions,” the prime minister said in a statement.

Gusmão reflected on “Lú Olo’s” role in Timor-Leste’s history, highlighting his lifelong commitment to the independence movement and his contribution to building the country’s democratic state.

The prime minister extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, expressing solidarity during their time of mourning.

Francisco Guterres “Lú Olo”, who served as President of the Republic from 2017 to 2022, died on June 22. He leaves behind a lasting legacy in Timor-Leste’s political history and in the nation’s struggle for independence.
