DILI, 01 July 2026 (TATOLI) — Timor-Leste’s national fibre-optic internet project is ready for commercial operations following the completion of the installation and testing of the international submarine cable, as well as the creation of the public corporation Cabos de Timor-Leste, EP, responsible for managing this strategic infrastructure, and progress towards its operationalisation.
Following the meeting of the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, Transport and Communications Minister Miguel Marques Gonçalves Manetelu told reporters that the commercial operation of the Timor-Leste Southern Submarine Cable System (TLSSC) is expected to enter commercial operation later this month.
He said the exact launch date will depend on the availability of Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, who is expected to preside over the launch ceremony.
Manetelu said that, in addition to the preparation for the launch of the commercial operation, the government is also strengthening the operational capacity of Cabos de Timor-Leste, EP, increasing redundancy in international connections, enhancing cybersecurity, and expanding the national fibre-optic network to improve digital connectivity and support the country’s digital economy.
The competition of the project marked a key milestone in Timor-Leste’s efforts to strengthen its digital infrastructure and international internet connectivity.
