DILI, 10 July 2026 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta presided over the swearing-in ceremony of the new Prosecutor General of the Republic, using the momentous occasion to champion a steadfastly independent, merit-based justice sector free from political interference.
During his address, the Head of State emphasized that while the judiciary must operate autonomously to uphold the rule of law and protect human dignity, he will never remain silent in the face of clear injustices.
Drawing on his extensive international human rights advocacy, the President reminded judicial actors to balance rigorous law enforcement with a profound respect for civil rights, urging institutions to build a justice system that reflects Timor-Leste’s unique realities rather than simply copying European frameworks.
Following the ceremony, the President addressed the media to outline his broader vision for the nation’s security and socio-economic development.
The Head of State expressed absolute confidence that the Greater Sunrise pipeline will be brought to Timor-Leste’s shores, emphasizing that this critical economic milestone remains a unified national policy regardless of government transitions.
Furthermore, President Ramos-Horta called for uncompromising, strict legal measures to combat transnational organized crime to protect the nation’s stability.
Simultaneously, he urged the State to approach national infrastructure projects—such as the ongoing airport expansion—with deep compassion, ensuring that affected vulnerable communities are treated with dignity and provided with fair, humane compensation for their relocation.
