DILI, 13 July 2026 (TATOLI) — The Portuguese Embassy in Dili has expressed profound sorrow over the death of Portuguese activist Paula Ferreira Pinto, paying tribute to her significant contribution to Timor-Leste’s struggle for freedom and independence.
Ferreira Pinto died on Monday at the National Hospital Guido Valadares in Dili after a prolonged illness.
The 69-year-old played a prominent role in mobilizing international support for Timor-Leste during the Indonesian occupation.
Among her most notable contributions was establishing a support network for independence leader Xanana Gusmão while he was imprisoned in Indonesia, helping to strengthen international solidarity with the Timorese resistance.
In a message of condolence, the Portuguese diplomatic mission in Timor-Leste expressed solidarity with Ferreira Pinto’s family, friends and colleagues, extending its deepest sympathies.
“At this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with and remain close to her family, friends and companions, to whom we extend our heartfelt condolences. To Dr. Roque Rodrigues, we send our friendship and unwavering support,” the embassy said in a statement on Monday.
