DILI, 01 June 2025 (TATOLI) –  In his message marking International Children’s Day, President José Ramos Horta underscored the importance of national unity in protecting and uplifting the children of Timor-Leste.

Horta said every child, regardless of their background or location—deserves to grow up and live in dignity, safety, and joy.

He said that International Children’s Day is a time to celebrate children as the nation’s greatest treasure and brightest hope for the future. He noted that every child holds the dreams that will one day shape the future of Timor-Leste and the world.

“As we honor this special day, I want every child in Timor-Leste to know that you are valued, you are loved, and your voices matter. From Tasi Feto to Tasi Mane, from rural villages to urban centers, every child deserves the opportunity to learn, to grow, to dream, and to thrive,” Horta said in a statement.

President José Ramos-Horta said the nation was built on the courage and sacrifice of those who believed in a better future, and that future now belongs to the children of Timor-Leste.

He described Timorese children as the inheritors of independence, the guardians of Timor-Leste’s culture, and the architects of the country’s future. “Your education is not just your right — it is the foundation upon which our nation will continue to build peace, prosperity, and progress.”

President Horta stressed the importance of investing in children’s development from the earliest stages of life—including before birth. He called for quality prenatal care for expectant mothers, safe delivery services, and strong support for early childhood development programs.

President said that Timor-Leste remains committed to supporting newborn care, encouraging breastfeeding, and strengthening early childhood programs, saying access to clean water, proper sanitation, and comprehensive preschool education forms the bedrock of healthy development.

“Every child deserves protection from harm, quality healthcare and education, nutritious meals, and the fundamental right to play and simply be children. These are not privileges — they are fundamental rights we must safeguard for every young person in our nation,” said Horta.

The Head of State praised the rising generation of Timorese youth who are already demonstrating leadership, learning multiple languages, embracing digital technology, and engaging with the global community—all while maintaining their cultural identity. “You inspire us all,” he said. “You prove that being small in size does not limit the greatness of our dreams or achievements.”

President Horta extended a call to action to parents, educators, community leaders, and policymakers, urging them to create safe, inclusive environments where children’s voices are heard and their potential nurtured. “We must listen to their ideas, support their aspirations, and ensure that every decision we make considers its impact on future generations.”

He outlined key areas of focus moving forward, including the expansion of early education centers, improvements to school infrastructure, access to nutritious meals, and increased support for families. “Together, we will build a Timor-Leste where every child can attend school, feels safe, dreams without limits, and knows they have a valued place in our nation’s story.”

“To all children: you are not just the leaders of tomorrow — you are important today. Your curiosity, joy, questions, and dreams matter. Keep learning, keep asking questions, keep believing in yourselves, and never forget that you have the power to make our world better,” Horta reiterated.

He reaffirmed that investing in children is not only a moral imperative but a strategic commitment to the future of Timor-Leste. “May this International Children’s Day remind us all that investing in children — from prenatal care through early education — is investing in peace, prosperity, and the beautiful future of our beloved Timor-Leste.”
