DILI, 22 october 2024 (TATOLI) – Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, and the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, discussed bilateral cooperation and the delimitation of the land border between the two nations.
At the bilateral meeting, which took place at the Jakarta Presidential Palace, Gusmão stressed the need of resolving the land border issues with Indonesia during Prabowo’s term as President of Indonesia.
During his previous visit to Indonesia, Prime Minister Gusmão and former Indonesian President Joko Widodo signed a series of bilateral agreements, including an agreement to complete land boundary negotiations.
“Our Prime Minister addressed our program with Indonesia, especially on the border. An agreement has already been signed, but we found some circumstances that need to be resolved together, so our Prime Minister called for coordination and acceleration to examine the situation and resolve it in a short period of time,” said Timor-Leste Foreign Miniser, Bendito Freitas.
Freitas said that following the meeting, President Subianto instructed Indonesia’s new Foreign Minister Sugiono to coordinate with the technical team of both parties to convey information on the progress of land border negotiations.
Regarding the invitation, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, confirmed that he has not yet decided whether he will participate or not, as he is still checking the agenda, which includes the G20 and PAEC agenda.
During the meeting President Subianto also asked about Timor-Leste’s candidacy for ASEAN and the Prime Minister replied that, currently, Timor-Leste is in the preparation phase and will be able to enter in 2025.
Ceremony attended by the Ambassador of Timor-Leste to Indonesia, Roberto Soares, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Sugiono, and accompanied by the Ambassador of Indonesia to Timor-Leste, Okto Dorinus Manik. The Head of Government, Xanana Gusmão, congratulated the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, on his victory in the elections to lead the nation for five years.
