DILI, 03 november 2022 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic José Ramos Horta, and his Portuguese counterpart Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, held a conversation on wednesday with more than 200 Timorese migrants, who are temporarily seeking shelter under Lisbon’s Municipal Police.
The migrants are currently living in precarious situations, as most of them are homeless and unemployed.
These migrant workers were recruited by the Timorese national travel agencies with false promises of working in Portugal and several other European countries.
“This is my question, from whom did you receive the information to come to Portugal? Don’t you know what to do in Portugal?” asked Rebelo.
Many migrants responded that they decided to come to Portugal in search of employment, while others informed that it took time to apply through the Portuguese Embassy in Dili, thus saying that they risked coming to Portugal that way.
Both Presidents showed commitment and kindness to find solutions to end the precariousness facing Timorese migrants.
“With love, we are here representing both countries (Portugal and Timor-Leste) to find solutions to your situations following the law and regulations,” said President Rebelo.
The two heads of state promised to support those who want to work in Portugal and those who want to return home.
Horta thanked Rebelo for showing his love and care for visiting the migrants and having direct conversations with them.
“Rebelo is the only President in the world who has shown great heart and love for Timor-Leste. Today, he is here to find the solution to your problem. You don’t have to worry, because we will find the solution to your problem,” Horta said.
President Horta had recently ordered Timor-Leste authorities to investigate the cases of sending Timorese migrants to Portugal by national travel agencies.
A migrant worker from Aileu municipality, Luis Ximenes thanked both Heads of State for showing their kindness in finding solutions to their problem.
“There are several groups of Timorese migrants here in Portugal. The national travel agencies told us that we would work directly after we arrive in Portugal. In fact, we are abandoned and jobless. We thank both presidents for visiting us to see our condition directly,” he said.
President Horta called on Timorese living in Portugal to behave well during their stay in Portugal.
He added that the Government of Timor-Leste and security authorities would make efforts to prevent others from falling victim.
