DILI, 12 May 2025 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste’s President, Jose Ramos Horta appointed lawmaker Nelson de Carvalho as prosecutor general on Monday.
Nelson de Carvalho, a lawyer, will take on the role for a four-year term, replacing Alfonso Lopez, who has been in the job since 2021.
Carvalho will be sworn in by President Horta on Tuesday, 13 May 2025, at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace at around 5 p.m. local time.
It’s recalled that last year, President Horta swore in Pascásio de Rosa Alves as the new Deputy Prosecutor General for the Central Office of State Litigation and Collective and Diffuse Interests.
Timor-Leste’s Constitution, specifically section 86(k) in conjunction with section 133(3), grants the President of the Republic, the power to appoint and swear in the new Prosecutor General.
